Merchant Square is formed of six buildings within the Paddington Basin redevelopment. It is one of the highest density developments in central London and so the provision of good levels of natural lighting, in accordance with relevant design standards, was one of the major challenges of the design.

Because there are large residential buildings in such close proximity to one another, the provision of good levels of natural lighting was greatly dependent upon the collaboration between the different members of the design team.

Significant design steering on the massing, facade and internal design was required to ensure a good level of natural lighting and achieve compliance with relevant design standards whilst working within the constraints imposed by many other factors of the design.

The planning application was accompanied by a full environmental statement for which we prepared the daylight, sunlight, overshadowing, light pollution and solar glare chapter. This scheme has subsequently gained full planning permission and is currently under construction.
